Incorporating healthy habits into your daily routine is one of the best ways you can show your body some love and care. In my last post, “Effective ways to build healthy habits into your self-care routine“, we went over some small steps to help ease the transition of incorporating some new habits into your routine. Today, we’ll be talking about what some of those healthy habits are and why they are so good for you.
So, to begin, what exactly are healthy habits?
Healthy habits are positive and healthy actions you take in your daily routine that have a positive impact on at least one aspect of your health, whether it be physical, mental, emotional or spiritual.
Healthy habits can take many forms and, to be fair, you have to create a healthy routine that fits into your schedule and the already-established flow of your day. Attempting to adopt someone else’s routine simply may not work for you due to different health requirements, restrictions and the vast amount of unique health needs people have. But, rest assured, you can find a healthy habit routine that works for you and your lifestyle.
Now, on to the fun part!
I’m about to share with you a list of 10 great healthy habits that you can choose from to start incorporating into your routine. There are many different views on what the 10 best healthy habits are and in this article, I’m simply sharing what I have found to be the most beneficial for myself and those I have spoken with who also take inspiration from some of the same healthy habits I have incorporated for myself. So, lets get started!
- Drink plenty of water.
We all know that drinking enough water is important to our bodily functions and keeping us healthy. Water keeps us hydrated, helps with digestion, keeps our joints lubricated and so many other things.

One way I use to help me stay on track when getting my ounces in each day is by using a tumbler I purchased from Walmart. It seems like something small, but sometimes the little things can help us the most when attempting to reach our goals! 2. Get enough steps in each day.
There is so much speculation about how many steps each day is healthy for someone to maintain. Some say 10,000 steps a day is ideal, while others maintain that around 4,000 to 5,000 is an attainable daily goal. If you’re looking to focus on steps, I would recommend picking up either a Fitbit, or an Apple Watch to help with your step tracking. The Fitbit encourages you to get a certain number of steps per hour and up to 10,000 steps a day. The Apple Watch also has a ton of features to help you personalize your own step and activity goals on a daily and weekly basis. You can set up notifications to receive reminders about your goals and the amount of steps you still need to get in. I personally have used both the Fitbit Versa and the Apple Watch for my exercise routines.
The thing to remember about physical activity is that you don’t want to injure yourself. It’s okay to implement a gradual escalation of activity level in a safe manner to get you to the level of physical activity you think would work best for you. But, before beginning any new exercise routine, talk to your doctor(especially if you do have preexisting conditions) to determine what a safe and attainable physical activity level is for your personal situation.

3. Set a goal to incorporate more fruits and veggies into your meals daily.
We have all been told since our early childhood days that fruits and vegetables are good for us. They contain many vitamins and nutrients that help maintain a healthy balance in our bodies and can have a positive impact on our blood sugar levels, digestion and energy levels. Planning out meals and snacks is a great way to incorporate more fruits and veggies into your daily diet.
4. Get enough sleep.
Getting enough sleep is important to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Sleep is that restorative process that helps us reset and get ready for another day. Skimping on sleep may seem okay at times but you definitely feel it in the long run. Not getting the quality sleep we need can have an affect on several things including thinking and reasoning, your eating habits and so much more.
5. Weigh yourself.
If your goal is to lose or maintain your current weight, then actually weighing yourself so you know where you are is important. You don’t have to weigh yourself daily if scales give you a serious case of anxiety but set up a schedule for yourself to weigh in so you will have an idea of where you are. Remember, don’t beat yourself up if the number on the scales isn’t exactly what you were expecting. The number on the scale doesn’t equate to your value, period. Weighing yourself is simply a tool that you can make use of.
6. Plan for some time away from social media.
While social media can be amazing for connecting with family and friends, sharing photos from important life events, or getting inspiration and ideas for a variety of things, it can also be harmful and toxic in its own way. There are times when we spend more time being bombarded by what a perfect model looks like on a social media site, or how much money CEO’s in top corporations make each year, than just enjoying our lives and being thankful for what we have accomplished in our daily journey’s.
Plan at least a couple of hours a week to take a break from social media and reconnect with your life, your reality and refocus on what is truly important to you.
7. Start journaling.
When you start a journal, it doesn’t have to be several pages at a time that you fill. It could just be a paragraph a day at first. Simply put down in words whatever is on your mind. It could be happiness, frustration, anger, confusion or any number of other emotions but putting something down on paper gives you an outlet and allows you to go back and analyze your thoughts a little more closely.
8. Try meditation and see if its a fit for you.
Meditation is not for everyone. Some have said that they can’t get their mind and their thoughts to be calm long enough to get through a meditation session with satisfactory, calming results.
I do like to incorporate a few meditation sessions into my routine throughout the month. I personally haven’t made it a habit on a daily or weekly basis but its still a very nice go-to relaxation method when I have had a particularly rough week or I just want to calm my mind and my breathing for a few moments and recenter myself.
9. Work on placing value on your boundaries in life and enforcing them.
Showing yourself enough respect and love to daily recognize your boundaries, acknowledge them and keep them intact are a great part of any health routine. Letting someone else make you uncomfortable, hurt you, push you around or belittle you is not okay and it’s not healthy.
We each have boundaries. Things that we will and won’t do. Things that each of us will and won’t put up with. Be it rude behavior, lack of respect for your privacy, lack of respect for your peace of mind. Constantly allowing others to manipulate you or devalue you in any way can be a toxic and dangerous thing.
Show yourself love and understanding by enforcing your boundaries and being your own best advocate for personal health and happiness.
10. Set a realistic goal for yourself and achieve it.
Respect yourself and love yourself enough to believe in your personal capabilities. Don’t miss out on something you would love to achieve because you are afraid you’ll fail. Not being perfect is a very real part of life. We all have things we succeed at and we all have found at least one thing that we have failed at. Don’t be afraid to try something new. Whether your attempt is a success or a failure, it is a memorable moment and an experience that you wouldn’t have had otherwise. This gives you the opportunity to create lasting memories while fostering a stronger belief in your own abilities.
I hope that you may find at least one of the above ten healthy habits a good fit for your daily routine. These are simply ideas and suggestions to help you start to explore which healthy habits you would like to try and which ones may work the best for you and your particular lifestyle.
The important thing to remember is that you are incorporating these healthy habits into your routine for yourself. By incorporating new healthy habits daily, you are placing focus back on the importance of your health and your happiness. There is never a one-size-fits-all approach to including new healthy habits into a routine but starting slowing and finding which ones fit the best into your schedule is important to the process of incorporating and sticking to these new habits and your new, healthier, way of life.
